Charleston RiverDogs News Release
GREENSBORO, N.C. - In a game that was halted by a rain delay for more than two hours in the seventh inning, the Charleston RiverDogs hung on for a 7-6 win over Greensboro in South Atlantic League action at NewBridge Bank Park Tuesday afternoon.
Charleston posts a 4-4 record for the road trip in improving to 15-17, 46-55 overall, while the Grasshoppers sit at 16-16, 48-54 overall.
Greensboro started quickly in the first against Josh Romanski, receiving a double from leadoff man Jose Duarte, a two-run home run from Sequoyah Stonecipher for his first SAL circuit clout and a solo shot from the next batter Kyle Jensen - his 10th of the year - for a 3-0 advantage.
Hector Rabago cracked a two-run home run in the third inning off Greensboro's Erick Carrillo (3-5) for his second of the series and third of the year, trimming the deficit to 3-2.
The offense continued its comeback in the fifth inning, as Charleston scored four times to take a 6-3 lead. DeAngelo Mack was hit by a pitch, Emerson Landoni singled, and Slade Heathcott was intentionally walked to load the bases. Kelvin Castro stroked a RBI single, and then Jimmy Paredes laced the next pitch from reliever Ramon Benjamin into the left-field corner for a bases-clearing double.
Carrillo, who was inserted as the starting pitcher less than an hour before the game for Greensboro, worked 4.1 innings, with six runs allowed on five hits, while issuing a walk and striking out two batters.
Stonecipher hit a RBI groundout in the bottom half, and Jensen drove home a run on a sacrifice fly to cut the score to 6-5.
Charleston came right back in the sixth, as Landoni flashed a sacrifice bunt with Neil Medchill at second and Mack at first, but pulled back and chopped a RBI single to right-centerfield for a 7-5 lead.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, heavy rain began to fall and sent the contest to a rain delay. During the course of the delay, NewBridge Bank Park lost electrical power, but play resumed after a two-hour, 14 minute stoppage.
Ryan Flannery entered for Charleston in the bottom of the seventh, and Greensboro promptly thinned the lead to 7-6 on Chad Cregar's RBI fielder's choice after a one-out RiverDogs error, but Flannery stranded the tying run at third base.
Flannery pitched scoreless ball in the eighth and ninth to earn his 13thsave, which is tied for fourth most in the SAL.
Romanski (6-3) picked up his fifth win in the last six starts in 5.0 innings for the RiverDogs, permitting five runs on five hits, while walking two and sinking four.
Landoni's three hits paced Charleston's 11-hit attack, with two each coming from Paredes, Mack and Rabago.
The RiverDogs begin a four-game homestand against their Palmetto State rival Greenville Drive, a Boston Red Sox affiliate, on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. Right-hander Sean Black (4-7, 4.29 ERA) toes the slab for Charleston, while Greenville sends left-hander Manuel Rivera (3-8, 3.56 ERA) to the hill.
