Legends Score Early, Beat Savannah 13-6

After Savannah scored four runs in the top of the first inning, the Lexington Legends came back with nine in the first three innings and went on to beat the Sand Gnats 13-6 Tuesday night at Applebee's Park.

A double by leadoff hitter Wilfredo Tovar got Savannah started in a wild first inning that included three hits, two walks and an error as the Sand Gnats sent 10 batters to the plate.

The Legends scored twice in the bottom of the first on three walks and Jonathan Meyer's two-out, two-RBI single.

Savannah made it 5-2 in the second on a single by Robbie Shields, a sacrifice bunt by Cesar Puello and a double by Travis Ozga. The Legends answered again with two runs in the bottom of the second. Brian Kemp and Jose Altuve singled, and Jake Goebbert was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After Pedro Martinez relieved starter Taylor Whitenton for Savannah, Kody Hinze singled to right field, scoring Kemp and Altuve to cut the lead to one at 5-4. Hinze had three RBI in the game, and leads the South Atlantic League with 73 for the season.

The Legends took charge with five runs in the third inning. With two outs and no one on base, Grant Hogue singled. Hogue stole second, and Brian Kemp reached on an error by Tovar at shortstop. Altuve singled to score Hogue as Kemp advanced to second. Jiovanni Mier reached first on an error by Ozga, the third baseman, and Kemp scored to put Lexington in front 6-5. Goebbert followed with his seventh home run of the season, a three-run shot to right field to give the Legends a 9-5 lead. Lexington added one run in the fifth inning and three in the seventh as Mier, Miguel Arrendell and Meyer each drove in a run. Hinze, Meyer and Goebbert each had three RBI in the game.

Savannah's final run came on a solo home run by Robbie Shields in the top of the seventh.

Mike Schurz (1-2), who pitched the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, got the win. Martinez (0-1) was the losing pitcher.
