Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
The Kannapolis Intimidators completed their most successful four-game series of the season with a 12-2 romp of the Asheville Tourists taking three-out-of-four from their cross-state rivals. The Intimidators recorded two shutouts in the series and also won one game by 14 and one by 10.
Cameron Bayne started for the Intimidators (14-18) and went eight innings for his second straight start. Bayne (7-9) allowed just five hits and two runs, four hits and both runs in a two-run fourth, for his team-leading seventh win of the season. Bayne retired the final 12 batters he faced in order from the fifth to the eighth, ending the day with his fifth strikeout of the game.
Offensively for the Intimidators, they used the long ball early and often to establish an advantage against Jonathan Vargas and the Tourists (18-14). In the first inning after a single by Tyler Saladino, Kyle Colligan hit a long blast over the wall in left to take a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning after Brady Shoemaker was hit by a pitch, Nick Ciolli hit a home run to right field to double the lead to four.
After the Tourists scored two runs in the fourth off Bayne, including one on a solo home run by Nolan Arenado, Jake Oester got a two-run blast for himself off Vargas to make it 6-2 and an RBI-double made it 7-2 by innings end. Vargas (3-8) went 3.2 innings, allowing both six hits and six runs with four strikeouts. Despite the five-run lead, the Intimidators were not done scoring when he exited.
In the sixth inning, the Intimidators added five more runs as Saladino had an RBI-single to score Oester with the bases loaded, Colligan added a sacrifice fly and Ciolli, a bases loaded double to bring in the final three runs of the game. The Intimidators scored 12 runs on 14 hits on the afternoon. Oester was a triple shy of the cycle and went 4-for-4, while Ciolli, Wagner and Saladino each had three hits.
The win aids the Intimidators to their first series win since June 12th when they took two-out-of-three from the Tourists, and the win splits the 16 games between the two teams this season at eight wins each.
The Intimidators will have an off day on Wednesday before they hit the road for a four game series with the Hickory Crawdads at LP Frans Stadium beginning Thursday at 7 pm. Justin Collop looks to continue his strong pitching ways as he will take to the hill in the series opener.
