"Switch-pitcher" Pat Venditte threw right-handed all the way in the ninth inning to earn his eighth save of the year as the Charleston RiverDogs held on to beat the Lexington Legends 3-2 Tuesday night.
Venditte, who can pitch effectively from either side, gave up a pinch single to Ronnie Ramirez to start the ninth, but a double play and a strikeout ended the threat and the game.
The RiverDogs took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Dan Brewer in the third inning. Brewer doubled home another run in the fifth inning, and a double by Melky Mesa in the sixth scored Abraham Almonte, who had singled, to make it 3-0.
The Legends came back in the seventh. Freddie Hernandez reached on an infield single, and Kody Hinze followed with his fourth home run of the year to cut the lead to one.
Starter Brett Marshall (1-3) pitched six innings of one-hit, no-run baseball to get the win. Kyle Greenwalt (2-3) was the losing pitcher. Jack Tilghman turned in four scoreless innings of relief for Lexington. He allowed one hit.
Lexington and Charleston will meet in game three of the four-game series Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Applebee's Park.
