Hickory Crawdads News Release

After losing an early 3-0, the Lakewood Blue Claws scored three runs in the fourth to break a 3-3 tie and went on to defeat the Hickory Crawdads 8-3 at First Energy Park in Lakewood, NJ.

After a season high three game winning streak during the eight game trip, the Crawdads have responded a season high three game losing streak as they evened their record at 16-16. Hickory completed their eight game road trip at 4-4.

Hickory played the game shorthanded as three infielders were out of the game due to injury. Erik Morrison was injured due to being struck by a broken bat in Monday's game; Jason Ogata suffered an injured hand during Saturday's game on a bunt attempt, and Jake Kaase was out with a sore foot. This left backup catcher Leonel De Los Santos to man second base for the first time in his career.

Hickory missed a chance to take an early lead, but ran themselves out of the first inning. With one out, De Los Santos singled to right. David Paisano followed with a double to right. On the play, De Los Santos was cut down at the plate and Paisano was also thrown out trying to move to third on the throw home.

Lakewood took advantage with a run of their own in the first. Harold Garcia led off with a single to left, and scored later in the inning on a single to center by Travis D'Arnaud. The Blue Claws struck again against Hickory starter Cliff Springston (2-3) in the second inning. Sebastian Valle and Troy Hanzawa led off the inning with back-to-back singles. After a sacrifice bunt advanced the runners, Garcia brought both runners home with a double to give Lakewood a 3-0 lead.

Hickory tied the game in the third inning against Tyler Cloyd. Doug Hogan led off with a double and scored on an infield single by Edward Martinez. Jared Bolden advanced Martinez to third on a single to right. De Los Santos brought Martinez home on a sacrifice fly to the corner in right field; on the play, Bolden advanced to second. Paisano then singled in Bolden with the tying run.

However, Lakewood took the lead for good in the fourth inning as Anthony Goes hit a three run home run, his first of the season, to make the score 6-3.

Goes turned out to be a thorn in the Crawdads side over the final three games of the series. In that stretch, Goes went 6-for-11 with four runs scored, four steals to go with three RBIs. He also made a game saving diving catch in the outfield to end the game on Sunday and ended Tuesday's game with another such catch.

From the fourth inning through eighth innings, Cloyd (3-2) and reliever Justin DeFratus shut down Hickory's offense, holding the Crawdads to only three base runners in that span.

Meanwhile, Lakewood added a run in each of the 7th and 8th innings to complete the scoring for the 8-3 final score.

Hickory finished the game with eleven hits on the night, with De Los Santos and Paisano leading with two hits each.

The Crawdads have an off day on Wednesday before returning to action on Thursday to begin an eight-game homestand, the first four against Lake County.
