Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - Anthony Gose had been winning games with his legs, the league leader in steals, but he smacked a three-run home run in the fourth to break a tie and help the Lakewood BlueClaws beat the Hickory Crawdads 7-3.
The BlueClaws (18-13) got out to a lead once again against the Crawdads (16-16) in the first inning as Travis d'Arnaud singled home Harold Garcia to give the BlueClaws a 1-0 lead. The BlueClaws extended their advantage after Sebastian Valle and Troy Hanzawa singled to begin the second inning and D'Arby Myers sacrificed them over into scoring position before Garcia doubled both runners in to make it 3-0.
However, much like in days past, the Crawdads came back and scored three runs on starter Tyler Cloyd in the third as he allowed three hits, all singles except for a lead-off double to Doug Hogan before he came around to score. Cloyd would then settle down.
With the game tied at three, Myers tripled with no one on base before Garcia walked and Gose stepped up to the plate. Gose golfed a ball over the wall in right field, his first home run as a professional and he grabbed three RBIs, making it a 6-3 ballgame.
Clyod (3-2), who has been fantastic at home this season, was roughed up early and allowed eight hits before settling down to work six innings, earning his third win of the season. He gave way to Justin De Fratus, who worked a clean seventh and eighth while striking out two. De Fratus allowed his first walk of the season in more than 24 innings as he pitched. Jacob Diekman closed out the game for the BlueClaws and worked a scoreless ninth as Gose dove to make the game ending catch to save a run.
Cliff Springston (2-3) worked well in five innings on Tuesday, but would have liked to get the final out of the fourth sooner. He went five and allowed six runs, three of them with none on and two out in the fourth. He was relieved by Cody Eppley and Matt Navarez, who combined to allow another run and pitch the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
The BlueClaws had lost their six previous attempts going for five games over .500. They went 5-3 in their eight game homestand.
The BlueClaws will have an off day on Wednesday, before playing Kannapolis on Thursday at 7:05 pm in the beginning of 24 games in 24 days. The stretch includes 16 games on the road and eight games against last place West Virginia.
