Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Ben Jones slammed two home runs and Charleston set or tied seven offensive season marks as the RiverDogs exterminated the Savannah Sand Gnats, 15-4, in South Atlantic League action Saturday night in front of 4,921 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Nine of Charleston's first 11 batters collected hits and the entire lineup recorded at least one hit by the fourth inning as Charleston won for the third consecutive night and improved to 32-30 on the season. Savannah falls to 24-38.
The RiverDogs set team season-high marks for runs, extra base hits and doubles, and tied their season high for hits, the largest margin of victory and most home runs in a game by the team and by an individual.
Marcos Vechionacci and Tim Battle each paced Charleston with three hits apiece and Jones led the club with four runs batted in while Vechionacci added three more. Ten players accounted for 20 hits, and eight of them drove home at least one run.
Charleston starter Zach Kroenke, who picked up his team-leading fifth win of the season against two losses, pitched seven complete innings and scattered seven hits while striking out four Sand Gnats. It was the RiverDogs' second consecutive game in which the starter went seven frames.
David Seccombe pitched the eighth inning and Jim Conroy took care of the ninth, allowing a three-run home run to Savannah's John Poppert.
The RiverDogs pushed across three runs in the first inning on back-to-back RBI doubles by Vechionacci and Jose Tabata. Henry drove home the inning's third tally with a run-scoring single.
Charleston scored four times in the second inning with Kevin Nelson and Austin Jackson driving home runs, and Vechionacci plated two more with a single. The RiverDogs added two more runs in the fourth with Jones' first of two two-run home runs.
Savannah scored their first run in the second inning on John Poppert's RBI double down the left field line. Kroenke settled down afterward and did not allow a run the rest of his night.
The RiverDogs pushed across five more runs in the sixth inning on Jones' second two-run home run of the night, a two-run double by Battle and a sacrifice fly by Mario Holmann.
Dee Brown, Erick San Pedro and Poppert each had two hits for the Sand Gnats.
Savannah starter John Lannan, who pitched the first inning and faced five batters in the second, suffered the loss that dropped his record to 2-4. In the process, he allowed seven runs, all earned, while facing only 11 batters.
The finale of this three-game series is set for Sunday at 4:05 p.m. as right-hander Bryan Villalona (4-3, 3.53 ERA) is set to start for Charleston while Savannah goes with right-hander Gene Yost (3-2, 4.08 ERA).
After Sunday's game, the RiverDogs continue this seven-game home stand by hosting the Greenville Drive for a four-game series that runs Monday through Thursday.
