Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Charleston's Abraham Almonte's three-run homer capped a five-run fifth inning as the RiverDogs slammed the Kannapolis Intimidators, 6-1, in South Atlantic League action Monday night in front of 4,504 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Charleston again got solid pitching, allowing only four hits, as the RiverDogs have now surrendered one run over the last 19 innings.
With the victory, the RiverDogs force a split in the series, finish the homestand with a 3-5 record and improve their second half record to 10-15 (49-46 overall) while the Intimidators fall to 14-9 in the second half (51-43 overall).
Kannapolis jumped to a 1-0 lead in the third when Lee Fischer drew a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Following a fielder's choice that advanced him to third, Fischer scored on a wild pitch.
The RiverDogs knotted the game at 1-1 in the fourth when Corban Joseph slugged a double and scored on Taylor Grote's two-out RBI single up the middle.
Charleston erupted for five runs in the fifth inning sending 10 men to the plate. The hosts scored on a RBI single by Chase Weems, a botched double-play attempt that resulted in a fielding error that scored Tommy Baldridge, and Almonte's three-run homer over the right field fence for his second home run of the season.
RiverDogs starter Manny Banuelos (8-4) earned the win after he allowed one earned run on four hits and two walks while striking out three in 5.2 innings. Relievers Gabriel Tatis and Jonathan Ortiz combined to finish the last 3.1 innings without giving up a hit as Tatis fanned four of the eight batters he faced.
Kannapolis starter Nevin Griffith (0-2) suffered the defeat after he threw 4.0 frames and was tagged for six runs - five earned - on 11 hits and a walk while striking out one.
The RiverDogs collected 11 hits with Joseph recording three and Almonte and Weems accounting for two each. Of Kannapolis' four hits, no one player had more than one.
After a rare off day the RiverDogs embark on a 10 day, eight-game road trip that starts with a four-game set with the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Charleston manager Torre Tyson expects to send Cory Arbiso (2-6, 3.78 ERA) to the hill while Greensboro is scheduled to throw right-hander Graham Johnson (5-3, 4.65 ERA).
