CHARLESTON, SC - Manny Banuelos and Dan Kapala combined to strike out four Sand Gnats as Charleston shutout Savannah, 1-0, in South Atlantic League action Monday in front of 847 fans at Savannah's Historic Grayson Stadium.
With the victory, the RiverDogs take the opening series of the second half and improve to 3-2 and 42-33 overall while the Sand Gnats slip below .500 to 2-3 in the second half and 37-38 overall.
The game's lone run was scored in the top of the seventh when the RiverDogs seized a 1-0 advantage when Abraham Almonte reached on an infield single and advanced to second on Taylor Grote's walk. Following a double steal that put the runners in scoring position, Tommy Baldridge knocked home Almonte on a fielder's choice.
Banuelos (6-3) set the tone as he pitched 6.2 stanzas and scattered seven hits and one walk while striking out three followed by Kapala (SV,1), who slammed the door over the final 2.1 frames rendering the Sand Gnats hitless, securing his first save and a RiverDogs win.
Savannah starter Jeurys Familia (5-5) suffered the hard luck defeat after he allowed one earned run on two hits and three walks while striking out seven in 6.1 innings on the mound.
Chase Weems' pair of base knocks paced the RiverDogs five-hit night while seven different Sand Gnats accounted for Savannah's seven hits.
