Suns Steal Nine Bases In Loss

Hagerstown Suns News Release

EASTLAKE, OH - On Sunday, the Hagerstown Suns (1-3) stole a season-high nine bases against the Lake County Captains (3-1), but still lost 8-7.

Steven Souza led the way with four stolen bases, and Charlie Fermaint, Derek Norris, Nick Arata, Steve Lombardozzi and Travis Reagan all swiped a bag apiece, but it wasn't enough to defeat Lake County.

The Suns led early and often, but Carlos Peralta (4-2) gave up two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to take the loss.

Hagerstown got off to a good start with two runs in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Norris walked and was driven in on a double by Tyler Moore who then scored on Souza's single to right field.

Souza then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, but was stranded as Fermaint struck out swinging to end the inning.

In the top of the third inning the Suns added another run, as Reagan and Arata executed a double-steal and Lake County catcher Adam Abraham's throw to third ended up in left field, allowing Reagan to trot home.

The Captains got all three runs back in the bottom of the third inning on three hits and a walk off Suns starter Marcos Frias.

After the Suns struck again in the top of the fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead, thanks in large part to a single and a stolen base by Fermaint, the Captains got back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score a 4-4.

Hagerstown added single runs in the top of the fifth and sixth innings, again due to the aggressive running game. Lombardozzi singled with one out, stole second and scored on a wild-pitch from second base in the fifth. Souza singled to lead off the sixth inning, stole second, stole third and scored on a single by Reagan to give the Suns a 6-4 lead.

Once again, the lead would not hold up as the Captains used two solo home runs, one in the sixth off Frias and one in the eighth off reliever Drew Storen, to tie the game 6-6.

It appeared the Suns may have finally taken the lead for good when Lombardozzi scored on a single by Norris in the top of the ninth inning, giving Hagerstown a 7-6 lead.

It was not to be, however, as with one out a relatively routine fly ball to left field ended up as a double when Fermaint lost his footing in the wet grass, allowing Delvi Cid to reach safely. After Cid advanced to third on a wild pitch by reliever Carlos Peralta, he scored on a sacrifice fly by Karexon Sanchez, tying the game at 7-6.

Peralta then walked the next batter before giving way to Patrick Arnold with one on and two outs in the ninth. Two passed balls, an unintentional walk and an intentional walk later, Arnold faced Chris Nash with two outs and the bases loaded. Nash singled to left field, driving in Walter Diaz, and giving the Captains the victory.

The Suns and Captains will play the final game of their five-game series at Classic Park on Monday at 7:00 p.m. After the game, the Suns will return to Hagerstown to start a four-game series with the Kannapolis Intimidators at Municipal Stadium.
