
Mesa Named SAL Player of the Week

CHARLESTON- Charleston RiverDogs outfielder Melky Mesa has been named the South Atlantic League (SAL) Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday.
Mesa has started the second half of the 2009 season on an offensive tear with a .647 (11x17) batting average, five runs, three doubles, two home runs, five RBI, two walks, and one stolen base while possessing a 1.118 slugging percentage.
Signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2003, Mesa leads the league with 16 home runs and ranks second in the league with 37 extra-base hits and 48 RBI in addition to a .556 slugging percentage, which places him third in the circuit.
For the 2009 season, Mesa is batting .270 with 70 hits, 16 doubles, five triples, and scored 47 runs in 70 games with the RiverDogs.
Mesa becomes the first Charleston position player to be named league Player of the Week and joins former right-handed pitcher Hector Noesi, who was named league Pitcher of the Week on May 18.
