Greensboro Grasshoppers News Release
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Looking to top off a long home stand with a win, the Greensboro Grasshoppers fell to the Charleston RiverDogs 3-1 on Wednesday afternoon at First Horizon Park.
The Hoppers split the four-game series with Charleston and ended the stand 5-3. They start a four-game road trip to Hagerstown with a game Thursday night.
With 24 games remaining in the South Atlantic League season, the Hoppers need to start a hot streak to have a chance to catch first-place Lakewood in the Northern Division.
"We have the ability to get hot," said manager Brandon Hyde. "We've got a good team and a split isn't a real accomplishment, on the road or at home. We should get more than that.
"Today's game was really disappointing because I felt we had opportunities and didn't get it done."
Greensboro stranded nine runners and left runners in scoring position several times. The biggest threat came in the sixth inning. After Brad Correll reached on a two-base error, Andy Jenkins stroked an RBI double. Jenkins moved to third base on Matt Kutler's fly out to center, but RiverDogs starter Bryan Villalona struck out Jon Fulton and Colin Roberson to end the inning.
It was Jenkins' 62nd RBI and improved his average with runners in scoring position to .420. He had two of the Hoppers' seven hits, with Agustin Septimo and Paul Witt picking up two each.
Charleston's Tony Roth had three hits, including an RBI single in the first inning. Irwil Rojas had two hits and an RBI and James Cooper added a sacrifice fly in the ninth.
Villalona (8-8) picked up the win with six good innings. R.J. Swindle pitched two shutout innings and Cory Stuart earned his ninth save. Swindle lowered his ERA to 0.29. The left-hander threw an assortment of slow curve balls from different arm angles and gave up just one hit.
Chris Volstad (10-8) took loss despite a fine outing, and Brad Stone pitched the final three innings.
After the Hagerstown trip, the Hoppers have a day off. They open a four-game series at First Horizon against Lexington on Aug. 15.
