RiverDogs Bark Loud and Proud, Post Season-Highs in Runs, Hits in 15-6 Dismantling of Augusta

CHARLESTON, SC - Charleston registered season-highs in runs and hits in walloping the Augusta GreenJackets, 15-6, in front 2,517 fans in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Wednesday night.

Charleston wins the series taking two of three, improving to 31-34 in the process, while the GreenJackets drop back-to-back games and fall to 39-36.

The 15 runs scored by the RiverDogs marks the most since Aug. 2008, while the 22 base hits notched by the offense is the most since the RiverDogs became a Yankees affiliate in 2005. All nine starters had at least one base hit, seven scored runs and six had RBI, which included five multi RBI efforts.

The RiverDogs lit the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning, when Emerson Landoni's single to left field brought Kyle Higashioka home from third for a 1-0 lead. Higashioka and DeAngelo Mack were both walked to open the frame, and Slade Heathcott's two-run double finished the 3-0 frame.

Augusta starter Kyle Vazquez (4-3) surrendered eight hits and seven earned runs, with one strikeout in a season-low 2.1 innings on the mound.

The RiverDogs broke the game wide open with a seven-run, eight-hit third inning, setting a new season-best in both categories in a single inning. Kelvin Castro's two-run double and RBI doubles by J.R. Murphy and Zoilo Almonte to extend the lead to 10-0.

Heathcott's second RBI double in the fourth increased the lead to 11-0.

RiverDogs starter Jairo Heredia (3-1) threw 4.2 innings of scoreless ball in his first start since returning from the DL. The Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native surrendered just three hits with one walk and three strikeouts, but finished one out shy of qualifying for the win.

Augusta dug into the Charleston lead with a six-run, six-hit sixth inning to cut the deficit to 11-6. Eliezer Zambrano contributed a two-run single, while Luke Anders smoked a two-run double to left-centerfield, and Dan Cook added a RBI single against Dickson Marquez, but Gabriel Tatis hemmed the bleeding by recording the last out.

Tatis (1-2) earned his first win in 2.1 scoreless innings while striking out three.

Murphy blooped a RBI single in the sixth for a 12-6 margin, while the RiverDogs pushed three more across in the eighth against Juan Martinez, who started the game at shortstop for Augusta. Castro hammered a RBI double, Landoni chipped in with a RBI single, and Jimmy Paredes brought the final to 15-6 with a RBI groundout.

Landoni went 5-for-5 becoming the first RiverDogs since July 2009 with a five-hit game. The Venezuelan also drove in three runs, scored four times and stole a pair of bases. Murphy added four hits with two RBI, while Rob Lyerly upped his hitting streak to 11 games going 3-for-5 with a run. Heathcott had a career-best four RBI, Castro posted three RBI and Paredes added two.

The RiverDogs hit the road for their final series of the first-half to take on the Rome Braves, the Single-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. Game one of the four-game series is set for Thursday at 7 p.m. with Charleston sending right-hander Kelvin Perez (3-3, 3.69) to the mound, while Rome counters with left-hander Chris Masters (1-3, 1.88).

FUN AT THE BALLPARK: Prior to the game the RiverDogs recognized all the children who participate in this week's baseball camp at The Joe. The campers all had their names announced and got to hit the field and shake the hands of all the counselors, including coaches and players. It was also Karate Kid Night at Riley Park, as fans participated in Karate Kid-themed events and trivia contests throughout the game. The Wild Wednesday went far beyond the $20 all-you-can-eat tickets as game MVP Slade Heathcott interacted with fans by the dugout following the contest, even giving out a number of bats to some of his younger fans.
