
Cohoon Does It Again: Tosses Third Consecutive Shutout

SAVANNAH, GA - Mark Cohoon threw his third-straight complete game shutout as the Savannah Sand Gnats (40-26) blew out the Rome Braves 12-0 at Historic Grayson Stadium on Wednesday night. The Augusta GreenJackets lost 15-6 to the Charleston RiverDogs, so the Gnats now lead Augusta by one game with four to play in the season's first half. The Gnats head to Augusta for four games to finish the half. Savannah must win at least two of the four games in Augusta to secure their first playoff berth since 1996.
Cohoon gave up just four hits, walked two and struck out seven, lowering his League-leading ERA to 1.30. In his last 27 shutout innings, Cohoon has struck out 22, walked four and given up just 10 hits. He has not allowed an earned run in 35.2 innings.
The Gnats have now won four games in a row and 10 of their last 12 as they chase a first half championship.
Savannah opened the game's scoring with a two run third inning. DH Pedro Zapata brought home the first run with an RBI double down the right field line. Zapata finished 5-5 with a double and 4 RBI. The five hits in a game ties a season high for a Savannah batter.
The Gnats blew the game open with a four-run fourth inning. The hits were a bases loaded two-run single from C Dock Doyle and a an RBI single to right by Zapata. Savannah tacked on a run in the sixth, four more in the seventh, and one in the eighth. In the seventh, Zapata singled home a pair.
The Gnats begin a four-game showdown in Augusta at 7:05 on Thursday night when RHP Armando Rodriguez (4-4, 3.26) takes on RHP Chris Heston (2-6, 5.74) for the Greenjackets. The radio broadcast will begin with the pregame show on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com at 6:50.
Second Half:
After four games in Augusta, the Gnats are off Monday-Wednesday for the SAL All-Star Break. Savannah returns to action with a Thirsty Thursday at Historic Grayson Stadium on June 24 against the Asheville Tourists. All beers and sodas are 2-for-1 thanks to Budweiser, Connect Savannah and Rock 106.1.
