
Crawdads Fall to Power, 5-3

HICKORY, NC - The West Virginia Power hit three home runs to propel them to a 5-3 win over the Hickory Crawdads, taking the final matchup between the two teams this season, before 888 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Wednesday night. Despite the loss, Hickory still remains just one game behind the Lakewood BlueClaws for 1st in the Northern Division with four games remaining in the half.
West Virginia (30-36) scored first in the third inning against Hickory starter RHP Neil Ramirez (6-5, 5.21 ERA). DH Kyle Morgan started the rally with a one-out solo homer to right for the first tally of the night. SS Bengie Gonzalez followed with a bunt single and stole second before CF David Rubinstein doubled him home. 2B Jarek Cunningham kept the Power momentum going with an RBI single to left to plate Rubinstein and give West Virginia an early, 3-0, lead.
The Crawdads (38-28) answered right back with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the third against Power starter RHP Kyle McPherson (5-6, 4.06 ERA). LF Ed Koncel led off the inning by reaching on a fielding error by 3B Jesus Brito before 1B Mike Ortiz and 2B Travis Adair each singled to load the bases with nobody out. After SS Leury Garcia popped out to short, RF Jared Prince smacked a double to deep right field to clear the bases and tie the game at 3-3.
The Power reclaimed the lead in the fourth on two home runs. RF Jose Hernandez led off the inning with a blast right down the left field line. One out later, Morgan hit his second homer of the night to right to account for the 5-3 West Virginia win.
Ramirez was tagged with the loss, surrendering five runs on eight hits with three strikeouts through five innings. LHP Joseph Ortiz, RHP Danny Gutierrez, RHP Tyler Tufts, and All-Star RHP Trevor Hurely each pitched one scorless inning of relief. McPherson allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk while striking out nine in seven innings to pick up the win. Former Crawdad RHP Duke Welker registered the save for West Virginia.

The Crawdads host the Greenville Drive for Thirsty Thursday with $1 beers and Pepsis compliments of Buffalo Wild Wings. Yadkin River Theory will perform live at the Crawdad Cafe following the game. Also, fans that wear a NASCAR shirt will get a FREE ticket to the game as part of NASCAR Night, presented by 1290 WHKY and Hickory Motor Speedway. Gates open at 6 p.m., first pitch is at 7 p.m.
