RiverDogs Activate Castillo, Send Medina to Tampa

CHARLESTON- The Charleston RiverDogs have activated starting pitcher Noel Castillo from the disabled list, the New York Yankees announced Saturday afternoon. The Yankees also announced that pitcher Gabe Medina has been transferred to the High Class-A Tampa Yankees to complete the transaction.

Castillo will rejoin the starting rotation tonight in game two of a four-game series against the Hickory Crawdads at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.

Castillo, who currently leads the staff in wins with a 7-5 mark and a 3.35 ERA, has not started a game since July 8 against Lexington, a contest in which the RiverDogs lost to the Legends, 3-1. The 6'1" right-hander appeared in only one game after that start, a 3.0 inning relief outing against West Virginia on July 14 to close out the last homestand.

In 99.1 innings of work, the Dominican native has allowed 43 runs (37 earned) on 76 hits with 35 walks and 87 strikeouts in his first full season of professional baseball.

Medina, who had been with the RiverDogs since his promotion from Staten Island on May 27, appeared in 17 games for Charleston and registered a 0-0 record and a 5.12 ERA. The 6'5" right-hander allowed 23 runs on 41 hits in 31.2 innings on the mount this season with nine walks and 18 strikeouts.

While the RiverDogs have had as many as 10 players on the DL at one point this season, only one player is still inactive in Wady Rufino, who has not played since May 7 with an upper-body injury.
