Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Salisbury, Md.- The Shorebirds scored first but the Legends laughed last on Saturday night in Salisbury as Lexington took their second straight win over Delmarva, 5-3 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. Three second inning runs was all the Birds could muster off the Legends pitching staff, and the visitors scored the final five tallies of the evening to earn the victory.
The Shorebirds took the early lead with back-to-back doubles by Joe Mahoney and Anthony Martinez in the last of the second. Kieron Pope's RBI single plated the second run and Pedro Florimon's two out double allowed Pope to cross the plate for Delmarva's 3-0 lead.
Unfortunately, the offense was quieted the rest of the night by the quartet of Anthony Bello, Brett Robinson, Jordan Powell, and Jay Pacello. Bello picked up his fifth win with six and two thirds strong innings, while Bello earned his 10th save with a flawless ninth that featured a pair of strikeouts.
Offensively, the Legends did not trail long as they were able to break through off Delmarva starter Nathan Nery in the top of the third. First baseman Eric Taylor's RBI double got Lexington on the board, and by the end of the inning, the Legends had evened the score at there runs apiece.
An inning later, Lexington took the lead on Cat Everett's sacrifice bunt that brought home Brandon Barnes from third. The Legends proceeded to add an insurance run in the fifth when Jonathan Fixler's sacrifice fly scored Taylor from third.
With the win, Lexington has now won seven of their last eight games, the last two at Delmarva's expense. The Shorebirds hope to get back on track on Sunday night behind the left arm of Chris Salberg, a 6:05 first pitch against the Legends.
