River Otters Select New Captain
January 27, 2004 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Missouri River Otters News Release
St. Charles, MO
The Missouri River Otters of the United Hockey League are proud to announce that Ryan Gillis has been named the new team captain. He will fill the void that was left when Joe Ritson was dealt to Kalamazoo earlier this month.
"It's a tremendous honor," said Gillis, " a nice show of respect from the coach and the guys. It doesn't change much about how I will go about my job. I'm still gonna play hard every night, I might just have to voice my opinion a little more to get the guys going."
Gillis, 27, has scored four goals and added 17 assists this season in 21 games. He is no stranger to the leadership role, as he served as the captain of the Jackson Bandits (ECHL) from 2000-2002.
"He's been a captain before," said Missouri head coach Lonnie Loach. "He is someone that the players look up to, and I have no doubt that he will make an excellent captain."
Gillis becomes the fifth captain in Missouri's five-year history, joining Chris Tok, Colin Chaulk, Loach, and Ritson on that list.
This is the eighth season of professional hockey for Gillis, who hails from New Brunswick. He has amassed 324 points and 590 penalty minutes in 501 career games.
He will look to lead the River Otters to victory this Thursday, as they host the Fort Wayne Komets at 7:30 CST.
