River Otters Defeat Mallards 3-2; Johnson Scores First UHL Goal

February 9, 2005 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Missouri River Otters News Release

Led by Jim MontgomeryÂ’s two assists and Ryan JohnsonÂ’s first goal, the Missouri River Otters snuck by the Quad City Mallards 3-2 in a shootout Wednesday night at the Family arena.

Both teams had numerous power plays in the first period, including a two-man advantage for the Mallards, but neither team could put the puck in the net. The Mallards scored the only goal in the second period, and it came on a River Otters power play. Joe Dusbabek fed a perfect cross-ice pass to Alexander Mathieu, who buried a one-timer behind Jason Tapp.

The River Otters came out flying in the final period, led by the offensive theatrics of Montgomery and Johnson. They tied the game eight minutes into the period, as Johnson buried the rebound of a Barret Jackman shot. Two minutes later the same line struck again, as Mat Snesrud took a great pass from Montgomery and hammered a slap-shot behind Mallards goaltender Jeff Reynaert. Quad City tied the game on a Troy Smith goal, and the teams went into the shootout.

Barrie Moore and Lars PettersenÂ’s breakaway goals offset goals by Mathieu and Greg Barber, and the shootout went into sudden death. On the seventh shot for Missouri, Riku Varjamo beat Reynaert with a devastating forehand fake and the River Otters skated off with the 3-2 victory. Tapp made 17 saves in the victory, while Reynaert made 30 saves in the shootout loss.

The Otters will host the Mallards Friday night at the Family Arena. The puck drops at 7:05, and all the action can be heard on KSLQ 104.5 FM and the B2 Webcast at www.riverotters.com.
