River Cats End Skid with 9-5 Win

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Michael Taylor finished 2-for-3 with a season-high-tying five RBIs, helping Sacramento snap its season-long five-game losing streak with a 9-5 win over the visiting Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Saturday night at Raley Field.

Sacramento wasted no time taking the lead, putting a four-spot on the board in the bottom of the first. The team's first run came on a Daric Barton bases-loaded walk, plating Jemile Weeks. Two batters later, Taylor cleared the bases with a double down the left-field line, scoring Barton, Hiro Nakajima, and Michael Choice.

Colorado Springs cut the lead in half with two runs in the second, then tied the game with two more in the fourth, but Sacramento pulled ahead for the final time in the bottom of the fourth when Taylor drove the first pitch of the frame over the left-field wall, putting the Cats ahead 5-2. Sacramento would tack on four more runs-two in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh-and the Sky Sox plated one more in the eighth, but Sacramento pulled off the 9-5 win.

Taylor's five-RBI night was his third of the year, and the home run was his eighth of the season. Nakajima went 1-for-4 with two runs, an RBI, a walk and his fourth home run, while Barton went 1-for-2 with three walks and a double. Michael Choice finished 2-for-3 with three runs and two walks, while Andrew Werner (7-9) tallied the win, allowing four earned on nine hits with six strikeouts in seven innings of work.

The loss was charged to C.J. Fick (1-1) who gave up three earned runs in 2.2 innings of relief. Kent Matthes-making his first appearance of the season with the Sky Sox-went 4-for-4 with two runs, three RBIs and a home run.

The River Cats continue their longest homestand of the season on U.S. Bank Sunday Funday, and Chris Carter Bobblehead Giveaway Day, when PCL wins-leader Bruce Billings (8-4, 4.37 ERA) starts opposite Sky Sox southpaw Jeff Francis (0-1, 6.75 ERA) at 6:05 p.m. at Raley Field.
