Iowa Cubs News Release
Memphis, TN - Carlos Martinez allowed just three hits and struck out eight in 7.2 innings, leading the Memphis Redbirds (38-40) to a 6-0 victory over the Iowa Cubs (38-40) at Auto Zone Park tonight. The Redbirds lead this series 2-0 and have pulled back into a first-place tie with the Cubs in the American Northern Division.
Martinez (2-1) didn't walk a batter and allowed just one hit through the first six innings, a double by Tim Torres in the top of the second. The other hits came when Dave Sappelt led off the top of the seventh with a single and Donnie Murphy had a pinch-hit infield hit as the last man Martinez faced before coming out of the game. Sam Freeman allowed a single to Logan Watkins in the eighth before getting out of the inning and Fernando Salas set the Cubs down in order in the ninth to complete the shutout. The Cubs have been shut out six times this season.
The Redbirds got on the board with an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning, but did the rest of their damage against Cubs' starter Nick Struck in the third. Two walks and an infield single loaded the bases with one out. Oscar Taveras cleared the bases with a double to the wall in left and scored on a two-run homer by Brock Peterson to complete the rally. It was Peterson's league-leading 18th homer of the year and his second of the series.
Struck (4-5) would work through five innings and fanned four in the loss. Barret Loux pitched two scoreless innings in relief and Marcus Hatley finished with a scoreless eighth.
The Cubs and Redbirds continue this series tomorrow night at 7:05 at Auto Zone Park. LH Brooks Raley (5-5, 5.40) will start for the Cubs against LH Nick Additon (5-2, 4.46). The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed at iowacubs.com, with the pre-game show starting at 6:45.
