Dee Gordon recorded a team-high four hits with two ninth-inning RBI on a night where Matt Kemp and Scott Van Slyke rehabbed for the Dodgers but Albuquerque (42-35) fell 9-5 to the Express (44-33). There were 12,356 fans on hand at Isotopes Park, the second largest crowd of the season. The Isotopes are now two games behind the first-place Express.
Red Patterson made his fifth start in his last seven appearances and allowed just one earned run through five frames on an Aaron Cunningham homer tying the game at one in the second. He surrendered two runs on six hits over 5.1 innings of work.
Jose Dominguez took over for Patterson in the sixth. He went a perfect two-thirds of an innings striking out a batter. The southpaw has not allowed a run in his last six appearances (5.1 IP). Lefty Geison Aguasviva (4-4, 4.67) surrendered three runs over an inning of work suffering the loss. Leury Garcia had the big blow with a two-run homer improving the Round Rock lead to 5-1.
Righty Kyle Cofield made his Isotopes debut, pitching one-plus innings. After a perfect eighth he allowed back-to-back homers including a three-run blast by Jared Howing padding Rock Rock's lead, 9-3. Anthony Ortega finished the game, not allowing another run to score.
Matt Kemp scored the Isotopes first run after reaching on an error in the first inning. Kemp started for Albuquerque as the designated hitter as part of his rehabilitation assignment after being placed on the 15-day disabled list with a mild right hamstring strain on May 30. Kemp was 0-for-5 with four strikeouts. Fellow rehabbing Dodger Scott Van Slyke also struggled, going 0-for-3 with three strikeouts.
Shortstop Dee Gordon swiped his 22 base of the season moving him into a tie with Reno's Tony Campana for second most in the Pacific Coast League. Matt Angle recorded the only multi-RBI game for Albuquerque with a pinch-hit single in the eighth scoring two runs.
Round Rock starter Jake Brigham (1-1, 5.87) earned the win pitching seven strong innings allowing one run while striking out nine.
Albuquerque and Round Rock take the field for game two of their four-game set tomorrow, June 23 at 6:05 PM MDT. The Dodgers' Matt Kemp and Scott Van Slyke are scheduled to continue their rehab assignments with the Isotopes tomorrow. Righty Matt Palmer (3-3, 4.26) is slated to start for the Albuquerque against right-handed Evan Meek (1-3, 4.55) of the Express.
