River Bandits Sting Cougars with 17 Hits

GENEVA, Ill.- Topping a no-hitter is a difficult thing to do, but the contest between the Cougars (28-15) and the River Bandits (20-22) did featured a swarm of bees and a cycle. Quad Cities offense did most of the buzzing on Sunday as the Cougars fell 10-3 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
The Cougars trailed in the first inning, but quickly tied things up as Yasiel Balaguert ended a 0-for-30 stretch with an RBI double to plate Ben Carhart for a 1-1 tie.
Daury Torrez struggled in the fourth inning as he gave up four consecutive hits including a two-run home run to Brian Holberton to allow a 5-1 lead for Quad Cities.
The River Bandits didn't stop in the fourth, as their offensive success poured into the fifth inning as Jack Mayfield, Conrad Gregor, Brett Booth and Holberton all connected on singles again to cash in two more runs, for a 7-1 advantage.
After the Cougars failed to score in the fifth, a flight of bees occupied the ballpark and prevented the players, coaches and umpires from taking the field. The cloud of insects hovered around Fifth Third Bank Ballpark for 16 minutes before play could resume.
Holberton needed a triple to complete the cycle and delivered a three-bagger in his fourth at-bat bringing home two more runs. A sacrifice fly from Tyler White plated Holberton for a 10-1 lead for the River Bandits.
Jacob Rogers managed to scratch in a few runs for the Cougars with his third home run of the year in the seventh and a RBI double in the ninth.
Jandel Gustave (3-2) earned the win holding the Cougars to just three hits through five innings, without striking out anyone, but also without allowing a walk. Torrez (4-2) suffered the loss being charged with seven runs, six earned on nine hits.
The Cougars now head to Wisconsin to begin a three-game series on the road against the Timber Rattlers on Monday. Juan Paniagua (0-2, 4.50) will toss for the Cougars against Wisconsin's Barret Astin (4-2, 4.25).
