LANSING, Mich. - In a tie game in the bottom of the ninth inning, Dayton Dragons reliever Evan Mitchell attempted to complete an intentional walk to Jorge Saez. That fourth pitch sailed high and to the backstop, allowing Justin Atkinson to hustle in from third base and lift the Lansing Lugnuts to an unlikely 4-3 win on Sunday afternoon at Cooley Law School Stadium.

Lansing (21-21) split the four-game series with Dayton (24-17), the leader in the Midwest League Eastern Division, despite being outhit 14 to 5.

With Mitchell (Loss, 1-2) on the mound to start the bottom of the ninth, Atkinson reached on an error by Dayton shortstop. Catcher Santiago Nessy followed with a flared single to right-centerfield, moving Atkinson from first to third, causing Dayton to elect to issue the ill-fated free pass to Saez.

Dayton tied the game at 3-3 in the seventh after center fielder Phillip Ervin tripled a run across, and first baseman Sebastian Elizalde knocked a sacrifice fly to center off of Lansing reliever Scott Silverstein (Blown Save, 3)(Win, 4-1).

Lugnuts starter Matt Dermody did not earn a decision after allowing one run on eight hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Lansing pitchers held Dayton to 3-for-15 with runners in scoring position, stranding 11 runners on base for the afternoon.

After Dayton starter Sal Romano tallied eight strikeouts in his first four innings, the Lugnuts touched him up for three runs in the fifth frame to take a 3-1 lead on an RBI single by D.J. Davis and a two-run single by Dickie Joe Thon.

The Lugs continue their seven-day home stand on Monday night, welcoming the Bowling Green Hot Rods to Cooley Law School Stadium for a three-game set. Lansing's Jeremy Gabryszwski (2-2, 3.45) will start on the mound, countered by Bowling Green pitcher Chris Kirsch (2-5, 5.86).
