Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Midland, Mich. - On getaway day, the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) built an early 5-0 lead, and held off the Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers) the rest of the way for a 5-4 victory on Sunday evening. The victory gave the Hot Rods a split in the series as they embark on the second leg of their seven-game road trip.
The Hot Rods wasted no time in going out in front. Johnny Field drew a five-pitch walk to start the game, and he moved up to second when Kean Wong hit a hard single to right field. Armando Araiza followed with a double down the left-field line to score both Field and Wong and give Bowling Green a 2-0 lead.
Runs in the second and third would stretch the Hot Rods lead to 4-0. In the second, Alexander Simon singled with two outs to extend his hitting streak to eight games. He would then steal second base, and move up to third on a throwing error by catcher Kyle Farmer. He then scored on a single by Field to center field. In the third, Pat Blair blooped a single to right-center field, and Oscar Hernandez doubled him home.
The Bowling Green scoring was completed in the fifth. Wong led off with a line-drive single up the middle, and he advanced to third on a base hit by Araiza. Granden Goetzman advanced Wong home with a sacrifice fly to the warning track in right field.
Great Lakes would chip away at the lead, but would get no closer than the final margin of 5-4. Jesmuel Valentin singled home Josmar Cordero to put the Loons on the board in the fifth, and Malcolm Holland would bunt him home to cut the lead to 5-2. An error allowed a Loons run to score in the sixth, and Jacob Scavuzzo drove home Valentin to cut the lead to one. However, Colton Reavis set the side down in order in the ninth to seal the victory and record his second save.
Jake Faria (3-2) recorded his third quality start of the season to earn the win. He went six innings, and allowed just three runs (two earned) on six hits. Faria did not issue a free pass and struck out three batters.
Zachary Bird (2-6) allowed five runs on nine hits over five frames to be handed the loss for the Loons.
Bowling Green now heads to Lansing, Mich. for a three-game series with the Lugnuts (Toronto Blue Jays). The Pepsi Pre-Game Show will begin at 5:50 p.m. CT on 1340 WBGN - The Ticket, and first pitch will be tossed at 6:05 p.m. CT as Chris Kirsch will take the mound for the Hot Rods.
