Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Quad Cities' defense has been solid of late, but after a 47-minute rain delay Sunday afternoon in Peoria, the River Bandits showed some rust, tying a season-high by committing five errors - three by second baseman Colin Walsh - and dropped the series finale with the Chiefs 12-11, snapping their six-game winning streak.
It was a game of runs, with Peoria jumping out to an early 3-0 advantage before Quad Cities scored five times in the top of the second off starter Michael Jensen. After three singles started the inning, Roberto De La Cruz delivered a two-run double down the line to cut the Chiefs' lead to 3-2. A pair of RBI singles by Neal Pritchard and Luis Mateo capped the scoring, and gave left-hander Kyle Hald (3-4) his first lead of the afternoon.
Hald lasted just 3 1/3 innings Sunday, and allowed eight runs, four earned, and tied a season-high in hits allowed, with ten, while striking out four and walking none.
After Quad Cities (2-1, 37-35) added two runs in the third on a sacrifice fly by Juan Castillo and an RBI single by David Medina, the Chiefs offense roared back to score eight unanswered runs over the next three innings of play, including a three-run home run by Dustin Geiger in the sixth, to give Peoria an 11-7 advantage heading into the seventh.
Peoria (1-2, 36-36) allowed Quad Cities back into the game in the top of the seventh, when Anthony Garcia hit a two-run home run, his eighth of the year, off Chiefs' reliever Hunter Cervenka (2-0) with one out in the inning to make it an 11-10 ballgame.
A single by Peoria center fielder Pin-Chieh Chen in the bottom of the inning off right-hander Travis Miller made it a 12-10 game, and the River Bandits could manage just one final run on an RBI single by Garcia in the top of the eighth.
Nick Martini (0-for-5) and Adam Lewis (0-for-4) were the only Quad Cities starters to not reach base in the finale. Garcia led the River Bandits offensively, going 4-for-4 with a home run and three runs batted in. Juan Castillo and David Medina each had three hits, as well.
Quad Cities continues their road trip with a three-game series at Wisconsin, which begins Monday at 7:05 p.m. Left-hander Dail Villanueva (3-4) is scheduled to start for the River Bandits and right-hander Mark Williams (4-5) will oppose him for Wisconsin.
