Big Seventh Inning Propels Hawks

South Bend Silver Hawks News Release


The South Bend Silver Hawks (37-36, 2-1) scored three runs in the seventh inning Sunday and raced past the West Michigan Whitecaps for a 4-1 series-clinching win. The Silver Hawks have won both series they have played at Fifth-Third Ballpark this season.

John Pedrotty (4-5) earned the win for the Silver Hawks allowing just one earned run on four hits over seven innings. The left-hander walked two and struck out three. Nick Avila (2-2) got saddled with the loss out of the bullpen, surrendering three runs - two earned - on two hits over 0.2 innings. Matt Sampled worked a scoreless ninth inning and tallied his fourth save in five tries this season.

Eric Groff paced the Silver Hawks offensively, going 2-for-5 with a double and two runs batted in. The Silver Hawks recorded just five hits in the game but benefited from seven West Michigan walks, three of which turned into Silver Hawks runs.

West Michigan claimed the early lead in the first inning on an RBI groundout from Aaron Westlake. Pedrotty settled down and tossed six consecutive scoreless innings to finish off his outing. Pedrotty induced inning-ending double plays in the fourth and fifth innings. The left-hander has generated a team-leading 11 double plays this season.

The Silver Hawks tied the game in the sixth inning on an opposite field RBI double from Groff off West Michigan starter Tommy Collier. The right-hander got a no decision, tossing six innings of one-run, three-hit baseball.

Avila entered in the seventh inning and allowed three Silver Hawks runs. Raul Navarro broke the tie with an RBI groundout; Tom Belza and Groff followed with RBI singles to put the Silver Hawks up by three runs.

Kable Hogben pitched a scoreless eighth inning out of the Silver Hawks bullpen.

Westlake led West Michigan offensively, finishing 1-for-3 with an RBI and two walks.

The Silver Hawks are 5-4 against the Whitecaps this season.

The Silver Hawks return home Monday to begin a nine-game home stand at Coveleski Stadium. The action begins Monday at 7:05 p.m. EST when the Great Lakes Loons come to town. Right-hander Jesse Darrah (5-3, 4.33) goes for South Bend while the Loons counter with righty Gustavo Gomez (4-6, 5.35).
