Rito Lugo, Jose Ramirez Shuts out Billings 3-0

Rito Lugo pitched 6 shutout innings in his Pioneer League debut and Jose Ramirez threw 3 shutout innings for the save as the Idah Falls Chukars shut out the Billings Mustangs 3-0 on Monday night at Dehler Park.

Lugo struck out 5 and allowed only 4 hits as the lefty looked impressive against a Mustangs team that was 12-3 in the 2nd half coming into play on Monday night. Lugo didn't walk any batters and threw 54 strikes in 74 pitches.

The Chukars got on the board in the 4th inning as Reed Rohlman led off the inning by reaching on an error by SS Urwin Juaquin. That was followed by a Jose Caraballo single advancing Rohlman to 3rd. Rohlman scored on a wild pitch by pitcher Adrian Rodriguez. Rodriguez threw another wild pitch to advance Caraballo to 3rd base. Caraballo scored on a Nick Hutchins sacrifice fly to make it a 2-0 chukars lead.

The Chukars picked up an insurance run in the 8th inning on a Jose Caraballo RBI single. Caraballo went 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI. The only other Chukar to have a multi-hit game was catcher Jesus Atencio, who went 2 for 4 in the game.

Jose Miguel Ramirez threw the last 3 innings for the Chukars and allowed 3 hits and picked up his 2nd save of the season. Ramirez has been outstanding out of the Chukars bullpen as his ERA falls to 3.72 on the year.

It's the 3rd time the Chukars pitching staff has shut-out an opponent. The Chukars won 17-0 over the Ogden Raptors on June 18th. JC Cloney pitched 6 shutout innings as Idaho Falls beat Missoula 6-0 on July 16th.

The Chukars have cut the Grand Junction lead in the Southern division to 1.5 games. Game 2 of the 3 game series is Tuesday night at 7:05 pm as Jonathan Bowlan/Nathan Webb are both expected to throw for the Chukars. They will be opposed by RHP Ricardo Smith.

Chukars notes: Tyler James hit a double in the 5th inning to extend his hitting streak to 17 games. Reed Rohlman hit a 6th inning double to take the lead in the league over Jose Caraballo for his 19th of the season. Caraballo is 2nd in the league with 18 doubles. There was only 1 walk combined in the game. It was by Billings pitcher Adrian Rodriguez. The Chukars didn't walk any Billings hitters. The Chukars didn't commit an error in the game. Idaho Falls is now 10-2 when they don't commit an error.
