Ripknees defeat Gary Giants

St. Paul, Minn. The ABA Minnesota Ripknees (12-3) dominated the third quarter, using a 37-7 run over a span of 8:21 to extend a 10 piont lead to 40 which sealed the game late in the third quarter as the Ripknees cruised to a 128-86 victory over the Gary (Ind) Giants on Thursday evening at the Gangelhoff Center. The Giants had just moved to Gary from Twin Cities.

The contest started competitively with Minnesota holding a 29-23 lead at the first quarter break but the Ripknees would sell the lead as much as 25 in the second quarter. With a 12-2 run to close out the first half, Gary cut the lead to 58-43.

Gary started strong in the second half cutting the lead to 59-49 as their run totaled 18-3 between the end of the second quarter through the beginning of the third. But then the Ripknees turned on the jets and the lead swelled to 50 points.

Former Minnesota State, Mankato All-American Jamel Staten's 29 points led a balance Ripknee offense which featured seven figures in double figures. Staten also posted one of three double-doubles for Minnesota, grabbing ten rebounds and adding four assists. Former Winona State All-Conference standout Travis Leech put in 12 points and 11 rebounds. Former Minneapolis Henry and Oklahoma University star Johnnie Gilbert had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The fans at the Gangelhoff Center lit up when the thirteenth man, Scott Schneweis pulled down an offensive rebound and dished to TlJ. Cottrell for a layup to notice and assist on the same possession. Schneweis finished with two rebounds and an assist. The Ripknees return to action this Sunday and Monday, Jan 7, 8 when they hit the road to take on the Sauk Valley Rollers and the Chicago Rockstars.
