August 30, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers had a good weekend at Bridgeport.
Cory Riordan made sure it was not a great one.
The Bluefish right-hander fired a six-hit shutout, pitching Bridgeport to a 2-0 victory over the Barnstormers to avoid a series sweep at Harbor Yard.
Lancaster maintained a 3 1/2 game lead in the Freedom Division as the York Revolution fell to Somerset, 8-3.
Riordan (5-3) allowed doubles to Brian Cavazos-Galvez and Zach Collier as well as four singles. He walked none and struck out six, including Kevin Rivers to finish the game.
Lancaster's biggest threat came in the third when Yusuke Kajimoto smashed a leadoff single into center, and Juan Apodaca, trying to sacrifice, beat out a bunt single when the Bluefish left first base uncovered. Jerry Owens bunted into a force at second, and Riordan roared back to strike out Collier and Kent Matthes to end the inning.
The Barnstormers had four other runners reach scoring position but finished the night 0-for-8 in RBI opportunities.
Chad Beck (3-3) threw the best of his five starts. The right-hander yielded five hits and two walks in seven innings while striking out just a pair.
He did, however, allow a first inning run for the fifth consecutive start. With one out, Ethan Chapman hit a sinking liner into center which caromed off a diving Jerry Owens for a double. Chapman stole third and scored when Wellington Dotel bounced out to short.
Bridgeport's other run came on the first pitch of the home fourth when Andres Rodriguez launched the series' only home run high into the screen above the left field wall for his sixth homer of the campaign.
The Barnstormers have two days off before taking on the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in a twi-night doubleheader on Wednesday. Lancaster is scheduled to send LHP Bryan Morgado (4-6) and RHP Madison Boer (2-2) to the hill against RHP Daryl Thompson (5-5) and LHP Brian Burres (7-8). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:00.
