
Blue Crabs End the Homestand on the Right Note with a Win

(Waldorf, MD, August 30th 2015) ---Southern Maryland took an early lead and led the entire way as the Blue Crabs picked up the 4-1 victory in the finale of the four game series.
In the bottom of the first, Fred Lewis ripped a triple into the alleyway in right center on the first pitch that he saw. The next hitter Casey Stevenson walked to put runners at first and third. The hot hitting Zach Wilson was next up, and Zach roped a double to left scoring Lewis, and Stevenson to make it 2-0 Southern Maryland.
Southern Maryland added another run in the bottom of the sixth. Bryant Nelson singled with two outs, and the next batter Grant Zawadzki broke a 0-24 hitless streak with an RBI Double down the left field line to score Bryant to make it 3-0 Southern Maryland.
In the top of the sixth, RHP Brian Grening was pitching into his sixth inning of work, and two runners reached base for the Ducks. With two outs, LHP Trey Barham came out of the bullpen to throw to Sean Burroughs who bounced out to the first baseman Zach Wilson on the first pitch that he saw to end the Ducks threat.
Long Island cracked the scoreboard in the top of the seventh on a Nelfi Zapata RBI Double to make it 4-1. In need of insurance runs, Southern Maryland put a run up on the board in the bottom of the eighth on a Craig Maddox double play groundout allowing Casey Stevenson to score to bring the score to its final of 4-1.
RHP Cody Eppley picked up his sixth save of the season when he sat down the Ducks in order in the top of the ninth. RHP Brian Grening picked up the win, going 5.2 innings, and striking out four without walking any Ducks hitters. It was the first win for Brian on the mound since July 1st.
Southern Maryland finishes off the month of August with a record of 9-19. The Blue Crabs will have off the next two days before hitting the road for a seven game road trip starting with Lancaster on Wednesday in a doubleheader.
