Saskatchewan Roughriders News Release

Saskatchewan Roughrider head coach Ken Miller announced today that potential free agent offensive lineman Gene Makowsky has re-signed a one-year plus an option contract with the club. Financial details were not released.

Miller also announced that Nelson Martin has been named the Riders defensive backs coach and Gordon Gilroy has been appointed as the team's new equipment manager.

Gene Makowsky is entering his 15th season in Saskatchewan. His 237 regular season games played and 13 playoff games are tops among active Riders. The 35-year old Saskatchewan native was named the West Division's nominee for Most Outstanding Lineman last season after playing all 18 regular season games at tackle, guard and centre. He was named the CFL's Most Outstanding Lineman in 2004 and 2005. Makowsky has been named a divisional all-star in each of the past five seasons and has been named a CFL all-star four times.

Nelson Martin returns to the CFL after spending two seasons as the special teams coordinator with the Ottawa Renegades in 2004 and 2005 where he worked with defensive coordinator Gary Etcheverry. The Toronto native was a first round pick (fifth overall) in the 1981 CFL Canadian Draft of the B.C. Lions. Martin helped the team qualify for six appearances in the West Division Final and two Grey Cups. Most recently, Martin spent the 2007 season as the defensive backs coach with the University of Toronto.

Gordon Gilroy has spent the last four seasons as the head equipment assistant with the Green and White under the direction of long time manager Norm Fong. Gilroy was born and raised in Regina and attended Thom Collegiate.
