Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Frisco RoughRiders used a five-run fourth inning to down the Springfield Cardinals by a final of 8-3 on Friday night in Frisco.

The win for the RoughRiders is their fourth in five tries against the Cards this year, dropping Springfield to just 1-7 overall.

Springfield starter Clayton Mortensen (0-1) was cruising until two outs into the fourth inning. After retiring the first two batters, Mortensen allowed the next three hitters to reach without the aid of a hit. Mortensen hit Taylor Teagarden, walked Max Ramirez on four pitches, then hit Adam Fox to load the bases. Steve Murphy followed with a two-run single to put Frisco ahead to stay at 2-1. Corey Ragsdale then ripped one off the top of the wall, scoring two to make it 4-1. Craig Gentry finally chased Mortensen with a bloop-single to right for a 5-1 lead.

The bullpen couldn't keep it close either, as the Riders added a run in the fifth on a John Mayberry home run and another in the sixth, thanks to one of two Springfield errors.

Trailing 7-1 in the seventh, Tyler Greene blasted a two-run shot to left, his first of the year to make it 7-3.

Luke Gregerson surrendered a solo shot in the eighth though, as Frisco rounded out the scoring with Murphy's first homer of the year, making it 8-3.

Frisco starter Michael Ballard (1-0) was impressive, giving up just one run on five hits over six innings to earn the win.

The Cards look to win the rubber game of the three-game series on Saturday night, sending Adam Ottavino to the mound against Frisco right-hander Michael Schlact (0-0). Game time from Frisco is 7:00pm.

After the completion of the six-game road trip, the Cards return to Hammons Field on Thursday, April 17th, as they face the Tulsa Drillers in a four-game home stand.
