Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
TULSA, Okla. - Center fielder Dexter Fowler clubbed his first two home runs of the season and left fielder Matt Miller added his first blast of the year to power Tulsa to a 4-3 victory over the Hooks in the Drillers' home opener.
The home team jumped on Hooks' starter Brain Bogusevic (0-1) early. Eric Young opened the bottom of the first with a single and scored on Fowler's first dinger just inside the left field foul pole. Two batters later, Miller powered one off the scoreboard in right-center to give the Drillers a 3-0 lead.
Second baseman Kaz Matsui, in his second game with the Hooks on rehab, doubled to the gap in left-center with two out in the top of the third. Shortstop Drew Sutton followed with his first homer of the year to left-center to bring the Hooks to within a run at 3-2.
Fowler struck again in the home third, drilling a solo shot to left-center to make it 4-2 Tulsa. The final run of the game crossed home in the top of the sixth as Hooks' center fielder Eli Iorg launched his first home run of the year to left-center. All seven runs Thursday night scored courtesy of the long ball.
Tulsa starter Brandon Hynick (1-1) allowed three runs on six hits over six innings to get the win. Pedro Strop retired three straight in the ninth for his first save.
Bogusevic was charged with four runs on five hits in four frames in getting tagged with the loss. Newcomer Jose Oyervidez, acquired by the Astros Wednesday in a trade with San Diego, tossed two innings of shutout relief, as did German Melendez.
To make room on the roster for Oyervidez, the Astros released reliever Brian Gordon.
Bud Norris toes the slab for Corpus Christi in game two of the series Friday night at 7:05. He'll be opposed by Tulsa's Ching-Lung Lo.
