Richmond Takes Two Of Three From Division Leading Washington

Richmond Roosters News Release

The Richmond Roosters concluded their six game homestand on a positive note Sunday afternoon as they defeated the Washington Wild Things 5-2. The win helped the Roosters finish an impressive stay at McBride Stadium with a 5-1 record.

The Roosters opened the series against the Wild Things in front of a sell out crowd Friday night by winning 4-3 with the help of late inning heroics provided by Phil Willingham and Pete Pirman. After failing to reach base through the first five innings of play, the Roosters battled back from a 3-0 deficit to 3-2 entering the bottom of the eighth inning.

Willingham drove in Jose Sandoval, Jr. to tie the game, and quickly stole second and advanced to third on a ground ball. Pirman came through with a two out infield single that allowed Willingham to score the go ahead run.

Saturday's game was not nearly as impressive for the Rooster fans that sold out McBride Stadium for the second straight night as Richmond fell 11-3. The Roosters again fell victim to strong pitching, this time provided by Washington starter Jared Howton. Howton did not allow a hit in six innings of work. A home run by Jay Coakley and a two-run triple by Joel Buchenauer provided much of the offense for Washington.

The Roosters used their power to win the rubber match Sunday afternoon as they belted four home runs to win 5-2, in front of the third straight sell out crowd. Kris Zacuto, Jeremiah Klosterman, Jose Sandoval, Jr., and Tom Pearce each hit home runs that accounted for all of the Roosters' scoring. Curt Moenter turned in another impressive pitching performance, allowing one earned run en route to his fourth win of the season.

The Roosters depart for their longest road trip of the season as they head to Evansville Monday for a three game series. The team will be on the road until July 9, when they return to McBride Stadium for a three game series with the Otters.
