TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and New Britain Rock Cats will meet in game two of a four-game series...The Flying Squirrels rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to knock off the Rock Cats 6-4 in front of a capacity crowd on Opening Day at The Diamond.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Left-hander Eric Surkamp gets the start in game two of the series for the Flying Squirrels...Making his Double-A debut...Enters the season rated as the #9 prospect in the San Francisco Giants farm system according to Baseball America...Made 17 starts with Advanced-A San Jose in 2010 going 4-2 with a 3.11 ERA...Struck out 180 batters and walked 22 in 101 1/3 innings...Had season cut short after dislocating his hip attempting to field a ground ball 7/18/10 against Lancaster...Struck out a career-high 14 batters 7/7/10 at Stockton...Tossed a nine-inning complete game shutout, allowing just two hits, 5/16/10 at Bakersfield...Recorded 12 quality starts in 17 total outings...Named a California League Mid-Season and Post Season All-Star...Twice named California League Pitcher of the Week...Entered the 2010 season rated as the #19 prospect in the San Francisco Giants farm system according to Baseball America...Spent all of 2009 with Low-A Augusta and went 11-5 with a 3.30 ERA in 23 starts...Struck out 169 batters and walked 39 in 131 innings, third-most strikeouts in all of MiLB...Promoted to Advanced-A San Jose for the California League playoffs...Started Game 3 of the CLCS, allowing three runs on seven hits in eight innings while striking out 12 to earn the series-clinching win against High Desert...Selected in the 6th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft...Attended North Carolina State University...Went 11-11 with a 4.35 ERA in 50 games, including 44 starts, in his collegiate career at NC State.

RALLY PIGS: The Flying Squirrels climbed out of an early 4-0 hole to record a season-opening win over New Britain last night 6-4...The largest come-from-behind win for Richmond a season was also four runs, which happened twice...The Flying Squirrels came back from a 4-0 deficit to defeat Portland 5-4 on 8/15/10 at The Diamond...Richmond also battled out of a 4-0 deficit at Bowie 5/10/10 to beat the Baysox 5-4...The Flying Squirrels trailed 4-3 last night after seven innings, plating three runs in the bottom of the eighth...The 2010 squad went just 4-59 when trailing after eight innings.
RIGHT WHERE THEY LEFT OFF: The Flying Squirrels announced a capacity crowd of 9,560 for last night's 2011 season-opener making it the 10th sellout in Flying Squirrels' history...Only four other teams (Louisville, Buffalo, Sacramento, and Pawtucket) drew more in their 2011 home openers yesterday than Richmond...The Flying Squirrels played in front of 13 crowds of over 9,000 at The Diamond including nine sellout crowds of 9,560 in 2010...Richmond led the Eastern League in both total (463,842) and average (6,626) attendance...It was the first time since 2005 that an Eastern League club other than Reading led the league in average attendance and the first time since 2004 that an EL club other than Reading led the league in total attendance.
PROSPECTING THE SQUIRRELS: Eight members of the Flying Squirrels 2011 roster are ranked in the top-30 prospects in the San Francisco Giants farm system according to Baseball America...The group includes infielder Charlie Culberson (#8), left-hander Eric Surkamp (#9), outfielder Roger Kieschnick (#14), right-hander Jason Stoffel (#22), outfielder Juan Perez (#24), left-hander Ryan Verdugo (#25), catcher Johnny Monell (#28), and left-hander Clayton Tanner (#30).
FAMILIAR FACES: Seven members of the Flying Squirrels inaugural 2010 squad return to Richmond to start the 2011 season...Right-handers Daryl Maday and Ronnie Ray, left-handers Clayton Tanner and David Quinowski, catcher Aaron Lowenstein, and infielder Sharlon Schoop all spent time with the Flying Squirrels in 2010...Tanner and Ray spent the entire season in Richmond....Tanner and Maday were both named Eastern League All-Stars; however, neither were available to pitch in the game.
