Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves had trouble getting the offense started on Friday night at Jerry Uht Park. However, one inning was the difference as they seized the opportunity to plate runs courtesy of Altoona miscues in a 2-1 win.
The Curve struck first in the top of the second inning against Erie starter L.J. Gagnier. With two outs in the inning, Erik Fryer jumped on the first pitch of the at bat and homered to left-center, giving Altoona a 1-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the fourth, Rawley Bishop and Bryan Pounds started the inning with back-to-back singles putting runners on first and second. Francisco Martinez grounded out, moving both runners into scoring position. Bryan Holaday followed with a ground ball back to the mound and Altoona starter Jeff Locke alertly threw to the plate, nailing Bishop for the second out. Locke then struck out Audy Ciriaco which would have been the last out of the inning, however a wild pitch and an errant throw by catcher Tony Sanchez allowed Pounds to come around to score, tying the game at 1-1. With Deik Scram hitting, a second wild pitch allowed Holaday to score, giving the âWolves a 2-1 lead.
The strong pitching staff would then take over. Gagnier, along with relievers Jared Gayhart, Austin Wood and Chance Ruffin, limited the Curve to just one hit over the final five innings of the game.
Gagnier (1-0) allowed a run on two hits with four walks and four strikeouts in five innings to earn the win.
Ruffin, in his first professional appearance, retired the side in order in the ninth for his first career save.
The SeaWolves and Curve continue their four-game series on Saturday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park...1:05 First Pitch.
