Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Cohoon offered up five innings of one-run ball in his 2011 debut and exited with a lead, but the bullpen could not hold it in Binghamton's 6-4 loss to Akron at Canal Park Friday night. Lorenzo Scott provided a spark for the B-Mets with three stolen bases and an RBI double.

Binghamton (1-1) climbed on top early against right-hander Joe Gardner, who was making his Double-A debut. Scott worked a leadoff walk and promptly stole second. After Jordany Valdespin walked, Scott stole third. With runners at the corners and Josh Satin at the plate, Valdespin broke for second drawing a throw from Aeros' catcher Chun Chen. This provided Scott just enough time to score ahead of the return throw from second baseman Cristo Arnal on the double steal. By stealing second, third and home in the same inning, Scott put the B-Mets ahead 1-0.

Kai Gronauer added to the lead in the second with an RBI single after Raul Reyes and Carlos Guzman singled to start the frame. Scott capped the scoring in the second with a ringing double to left-center off Gardner, vaulting the lead to 3-0.

Akron (1-1) plated its first run in the third against Cohoon. Juan Diaz, Chen and John Drennen all singled to load the bases with one out. Matt Lawson plated Diaz with a deep sac fly to left, cutting the deficit to two.

Cohoon exited after the fifth inning. He allowed seven hits and struck out five in the no-decision. Dylan Owen replaced him for the sixth and got into trouble immediately. Tim Fedroff doubled to left to start the rally. After Arnal walked, Owen struck out Donnie Webb. That proved to be the only out he would get. Jordan Henry followed with a bases-clearing double to tie the score. Diaz gave the Aeros their first lead next with an RBI triple to left, scoring Henry. Chen struck the final blow to Owen with an RBI single to score Diaz, making it 5-3. Owen was hung with the loss.

Webb upped the Akron advantage to three with a solo homer to center off reliever Edgar Ramirez.

The B-Mets closed to within two in the eighth courtesy of an RBI double from Reyes off Bryan Price, but the Akron bullpen would not allow anything further.

Cory Burns entered in the ninth for the Aeros and struck out the side to secure his first save and the Aeros first win over the B-Mets since August 31, 2009.

Gardner lasted six innings to pick up the win. He allowed three runs on five hits and walked four.

Valdespin, Reyes and Gronauer all output two-hit games and the B-Mets pounded out nine hits after being held to just three in the season opener.

RHP Brad Holt (0-0) will start Game 3 of the series for Binghamton opposite LHP Scott Barnes (0-0) of Akron. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 12:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
