Richmond, VAâ After two goals annulled and a scoreless game in regulation, the Richmond Kickers were able to defeat the Cape Cod Crusaders (PDL) early in overtime, advancing to the fourth round of the 2004 U.S. Open Cup. The game-winning goal off of a free kick from Kickers midfielder David Hayes clinched the match and Richmond will face D.C. United of Major League Soccer on Wednesday, July 21st at 7:00 p.m. at the University of Richmond Stadium in Richmond, VA.
Minute-By-Minute Highlights
5th minute: A Kickers shot deflects off of a Crusader defender and bounces wide to the left edge of the penalty box. Hayes is there to take one touch, and fires on goal. Mahoney is quick off his line and dives to punch out the ball. Clyde Simms is there but the ball is just out of reach and it is cleared out by the Crusader defense.
31st minute: A Kickers player on the Crusader penalty box allows the ball to slide through his legs. An unsuspecting Crusader defense lets the ball through as well as Matthew Delicate. He takes a few touches around a defender to get closer to the goal, but runs out of space and the shot is buried right into a waiting Mahoney.
45th minute: Drew McAthy takes the ball wide and up the line, and then crosses high to the far post. Danton O'Brien is there, jumps high, and heads the ball directly on goal. Pascale is right there for the save.
53rd minute: The ball is played through by the Kickers' midfield to Cephas and Burke slipping past the defense. Burke gets there first, takes two touches around Mahoney, and slides it into the net, but the play is called offside and there is no goal.
57th minute: The ball is played from the center of the field over the Crusader defense. Cephas puts on a burst of speed and arrives first to the bouncing ball. He takes one look ahead, sees an oncoming Mahoney, and extends his right foot to chip the ball over the keeper. The ball is just slightly off-target and bounces out for a goal kick.
76th minute: A Crusader corner kick finds McAthy's boot, and he winds up and shoots. Pascale is already low to the floor and miraculously dives and punches the ball out for the save.
80th minute: Kareem Smith gets the ball and plenty of time about 35 yards out from the goal. He takes a touch to tee up the ball, and releases a powerful, high, and straight shot. Pascale is again there and jumps of to collect the ball.
94th minute: GOAL Richmond: 1 Cape Cod: 0; David Hayes lines up to take a free kick from about 25 yards out. He rips the shot right over the wall, over the keeper, and into the net for the win.
