Charleston Battery News Release

Charleston, SC- The Charleston Battery defeated the Wilmington Hammerheads by a score of two goals to none tonight at Blackbaud Stadium in front of a crowd of 1,255. The game was a third round Lamar Hunt US Open Cup match and the Battery advances to face Major League Soccer's Metrostars on Tuesday, July 20 at Blackbaud. Veteran forward Paul Conway led the way with a first-half brace as Charleston ended a winless streak that dated back to May 11.

The Battery opened the scoring in the 2nd minute. The ball was swept into the 18-yard box and Wilmington goalkeeper, Billy Platz failed to hold on to the cross. As the ball dropped Conway was quickest to react and he slotted home from six yards out.

Charleston kept up the early pressure and had two additional chances inside the first ten minutes. Midfielder Chris Goos shot wide in the 4th minute, then forward Greg Simmonds headed a Goos cross over the bar in the 8th.

Wilmington's first opportunity fell to midfielder Kenny Bundy in the 37th minute. The ball was whipped in to him from the right side but his header went straight to Battery keeper, Dusty Hudock.

Charleston doubled its lead in the 44th minute. Conway latched onto a Greg Simmonds pass at the edge of the box. As Platz approached he slipped the ball to the right of the keeper. Defender Mark Hubbard stretched to keep it out but his touch came too late and the ball ended up in the back of the net.

After the break Charleston continued to enjoy the majority of possession out-shooting Wilmington 13-1. Conway almost had a hat-trick in the 66th minute but couldn't quite reach a Simmonds pass that flew across the face of the goal.

Substitute midfielder Henrik Jensen was unlucky in the 78th minute. After receiving the ball just outside the box he curled a left-footed shot just over the bar from twenty yards out.

Charleston will host Major League Soccer's Metrostars in the next round of the Open Cup at Blackbaud Stadium, Tuesday, July 20; kick off is set for 7:30 PM.
