Timbers, Quakes tickets to go on sale Friday, July 2

Portland, OR- Tickets for the Portland Timbers' Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match against the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer go on sale to the general public on Friday, July 2 at 10 a.m., it was announced Wednesday night.

The fourth-round clash between the A-League and MLS teams takes place at PGE Park on Wednesday, July 14 at 7 p.m.

The Timbers learned last week that a victory over the Utah Blitzz in third-round play would earn them a home match against the Earthquakes in the fourth round of competition.

In their first U.S. Open Cup match to date, the Timbers advanced to the fourth round with a 2-1 victory over the Blitzz Wednesday night in Salt Lake City, Utah, setting up Portland's second-ever match against the Earthquakes, the 2001 MLS Cup champs who feature star forward Landon Donovan.

In 2001, the Timbers defeated San Jose 2-1 in an exhibition match at PGE Park.

Beginning Friday at 10 a.m., tickets will be available for purchase at the PGE Park box office as well as Portland-area Ticketmaster outlets. Individual tickets can be purchased by phone at (503) 224-4400 or online at www.ticketmaster.com http://www.ticketmaster.com.

Ticket prices for the U.S. Open Cup match are as follows: General Admission: $10.00 Upper Reserved: $12.00 Lower Reserved: $17.00 Premier Seating: $23.00

Groups of 15 or more are encouraged to call the Timbers ticket office at (503)553-5555 for discounts of $2.00-3.00 per ticket, depending on seating category. Exclusive Party Suites and picnic packages are also available by calling the Timbers ticket office.

Portland qualified for the U.S. Open Cup for the first time this season by defeating Seattle 3-1 on aggregate goals over two matches in early May. The tournament, which runs concurrent to the Timbers season, began with 40 teams from three professional leagues and two amateur leagues in a bid to determine the top team in American soccer.

The Timbers earned byes in the first and second rounds of the tournament.

ABOUT THE LAMAR HUNT U.S. OPEN CUP The U.S. Open Cup, which is recognized as U.S. Soccer's National Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. Within the U.S. Open Cup framework, teams compete in one of the following four categories: professional outdoor Division I (Major League Soccer), Division II (A-League) or Division III (USL Professional Soccer League); or Amateur Division (USL Premier Development League & U.S. Adult Soccer Association).

The U.S. Open Cup is a single-elimination tournament, with drawn games being decided by two 15-minute, sudden death ("Golden Goal") overtime sessions. If neither team scores during the two overtimes, the winner is decided on penalty kicks. The team that advances the furthest from each level except Division I earns a $10,000 cash prize. The runner-up takes home $50,000, while the champion collects $100,000.
