Brockton Rox News Release
Quebec City, Quebec (August 14, 2008) - After a heart-wrenching 7-6 loss on Wednesday night to Quebec, the Brockton Rox came back on Thursday led by RHP Wayne Lundgren and avoided a sweep at the hands of the Capitales with a 3-1 victory. Lundgren pitched eight tremendous innings, allowing one run on seven hits while issuing one walk and striking out six.
The Rox handed Quebec RHP Michel Simard his second loss of the season as he dropped to 11-2. Both of his losses have come against Brockton, who opened the scoring early and chased Simard after just five innings. 1B Eduardo Rios drove in two runs with a single in the second inning to put the Rox in front 2-0. Quebec answered in the third inning when CF Goefrey Tomlinson drove home RF Mike Goss with an RBI double. The final run of the game was put on the board in the fourth inning when Brockton CF Josh Womack hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to re-establish a two-run lead for the Rox.
From that point forward, Lundgren was in control. He allowed only four base runners over his last five innings of work, and after the third, did not allow more than one man on in an inning. Lundgren picked up his eighth victory of the year, and helped the Rox break a 10-game losing streak against Quebec and avoid be swept by the Capitales for the third consecutive series.
RHP Jerry Dunn pitched the ninth inning and recorded his 18th save of the year to tie for the league-lead. Rox 2B Melvin Falu broke the Rox record for hits in a season with a ninth-inning single. It was his 112th hit of the year, snapping a mark set by former 1B Craig Lewis in 2003.
Brockton returns home to face the Worcester Tornadoes for a weekend series at Campanelli Stadium beginning on Friday night. RHP Rony Mercado (1-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his second professional start, and first in Brockton against Worcester RHP Shaun McNamara (2-9, 6.40 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
