RGV Vipers Complete Weekend Sweep of Texas Legends

HIDALGO, Texas - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (20-17) completed a weekend sweep of the Texas Legends (17-18) with a 131-128 win tonight at State Farm Arena. The Vipers also topped the Legends 113-101 Friday night.

Will Cummings led the Vipers with 27 points, followed by Jarvis Threatt with 23 points. Raphiael Putney recorded 22 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks. Jaron Johnson and Houston Rockets assignee Sam Dekker scored 13 points apiece. Chris Walker scored 6 points and led the team with 11 rebounds.

Tu Holloway led Texas with a season-high 45 points. Jamil Wilson added 25 points, followed by Patrick Miller with 21 points. Micheal Eric added a double-double 10 points and 11 rebounds, plus 4 blocks.

Jaron Johnson scored the first two points for the Vipers with two shots at the free throw line. Cummings followed with a three-pointer to put RGV up 5-0. Holloway made the first basket for the Legends to put Texas on the scoreboard 5-2. The Vipers controlled the first quarter. Legends head coach Nick Van Excel received two early technical fouls to leave the court with 2:57 remaining in the first quarter. Hamilton gave the Vipers their largest lead of the first quarter, 36-21 with a free throw. At the end of the first period, RGV held a 40-32 advantage.

The Vipers paced the first half of the second quarter. With 5:22 on the clock, Dekker made a layup to give RGV its largest lead of the game 65-45. However, the Legends responded with a 19-2 run to finish the first half. Holloway scored 17 of his 45 total points in the second quarter to help Texas close its deficit to 67-59 at halftime.

The Legends fought their way back throughout the third quarter. Holloway made a three-pointer to give Texas its first lead of the game 71-70. Murry made a jump shot to put the Legends ahead 89-79 with 4:46 remaining in the third quarter. However, the Vipers were able to catch up and tie the game at 96 points heading into the final period.

Both teams battled throughout the fourth quarter. Holloway made a layup to start the quarter and put Texas on top 98-96. Livingston tied the game at 110 points with 8:14 remaining in the game, but Miller made two free throws to send the Legends on a 12-2 run to hold a 122-112 advantage with 5:05 on the clock. Cummings answered with a three-pointer to send RGV on a 15-4 run to steal a 127-126 lead with less than a minute on the clock. Eric followed with a dunk, but Dekker responded with a three-pointer to put RGV ahead 130-128. Cummings sealed the 131-128 win with a shot at the free throw line.

The Vipers hit the road this week for a pair of Eastern Conference games. Wednesday, March 2, the Vipers play an early Kids Day game at 10 a.m. (CST) at Grand Rapids.
