Louisville Bats News Release

LOUISVILLE, Ky - The Louisville Bats (27-27) played small ball Thursday night as they collected nine hits, all singles, en route to a 4-1 win over the Columbus Clippers (29-25). Greg Reynolds (W, 5-0) was dominating in a career high 8.1 innnings allowing nine hits and one run while forcing 15 groundballs for outs. The win guarantees Louisville their first winning month (16-14) since April 2011, with one game left tomorrow at Toledo.

Columbus got their lone run early in the top of the second thanks to former Louisville player Jeremy Hermida. Hermida hit a homerun (9) to deep right-center onto the Overlook Deck giving Columbus their only lead of the game at 1-0.

Louisville was quick to answer when veteran catcher and part-time reliever Corky Miller hit a 2-RBI single in the bottom of the second. Denis Phipps singled and Mike Hessman walked, extending Hessman's on-base streak to 25 games. Hessman's team high five game hitting streak was broken however, as he went 0-2 with two walks and a run scored.

The Bats added on another run in the bottom of the fourth when Kristopher Negron singled in Phipps. Negron was only 1-for-4 hitting on the night, but was spectacular on defense. Negron assisted on nine of the 15 ground balls that Reynolds forced the Clippers into. Clipper's starter Danny Salazar (L, 0-1) was pulled after the fourth, giving up six hits and three runs while striking out four and walking two.

Miller collected his third RBI of the night, a season high, in the bottom of the eighth when he hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly, scoring Neftali Soto. Reynolds entered the ninth inning with 107 pitches, looking to throw the first complete game for the Bats since Jeff Francis in June 2012. After a one out single from Hermida, Reynolds was pulled in favor of Curtis Partch. Partch (S, 1) got the final two outs, striking out the final batter Juan Diaz with fastballs of 99, 98, 99.

Phipps and Emmanuel Burriss both collected multi-hit games, each going 2-for-4. Billy Hamilton stole his league leading 30th base of the season in the seventh inning. Reynolds' 5-0 start is the best start for a Bats pitcher since Tom Cochran started the 2011 season 5-0.

Hermida went 4-for-4 on the night with the solo homerun, the only Clipper to circle the bases all night. Tim Fedroff (19 game on-base streak) and Lonnie Chisenhall (10 game hit streak) both extended their respective streaks with 1-for-4 nights.

Louisville will now head to Toledo (17-38) who has the league's worst record. The Bats are 5-3 against Toledo this season, 2-2 on the road. RHP Pedro Villarreal (1-3, 5.37) for the Bats will go up against RHP Derek Hankins (1-3, 3.65) for Toledo.
