Late Rally Falls Short in 8-4 Loss in Charlotte

The Mud Hens rallied for two eighth inning runs, but the Knights eventually shut the door to secure an 8-4 victory and the series split in Charlotte on Thursday night.
The game had the early makings of a pitchers' duel before Charlotte bursted for three runs off Shawn Hill in the bottom of the fifth. The Hens cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the next inning after Ben Guez scored Nick Castellanos with a sacrifice fly, and Kevin Russo doubled in Bryan Holaday.
Things got rough for Hill in the bottom of the sixth when the Knights rallied to load the bases and Hill allowed a grand slam to Jim Gallagher to give the Knights a 7-2 lead. Brent Morel stretched Charlotte's run total to eight later in the inning with an RBI double.
The Mud Hens rallied for two runs in the eighth inning when Danny Dorn connected for a two-run homer for the second night in a row, this one cutting the score to 8-4.
The Hens now return home to open up a series with the Louisville Bats starting at 7:00 p.m. Friday. RHP Derek Hankins is scheduled to make the start in Toledo.
