Revs Use Big Inning To Win Second Straight In Lancaster
May 6, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution rallied for five runs in the third inning and Corey Thurman earned his first win of the year as the Revs won their second straight, 5-3 over the Lancaster Barnstormers on Tuesday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium in Lancaster. The Revs will go for the three-game sweep in Thursday's series finale at 11 a.m., before returning home for the weekend.
The night began with the first rain delay of the season, but the one-hour, 19-minute wait proved worthwhile for the Revs.
With the game scoreless, Willie Cabrera laid the groundwork for the third inning rally by working a one-out walk. Brandon Boggs followed with a line drive single to center, and Wilson Valdez drew another free pass to load the bases. Eric Patterson then patiently took a walk of his own to force in the first run for a 1-0 lead. Andres Perez followed with an infield single up the middle to drive in Boggs, while Valdez also raced home as shortstop Lance Zawadski's throw skipped away resulting in an error. Brandon Jones was hit by a pitch to reload the bases, and Bryan Pounds capped the rally with a line drive two-run single to left for a 5-0 lead, chasing Lancaster starter Shunsuke Watanabe (0-1) as the Revs matched their biggest inning of the young season.
Lancaster crept back into the game on a two-run single to right from Zawadski with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, but Thurman allowed nothing else, rebounding for his strongest inning of the night, a quick 1-2-3 frame against the top of the Lancaster order in the fifth.
Thurman (1-1) allowed five hits and two runs over his five innings, and walked just one while striking out two. The win was his 66th all-time in a Revs uniform as he is now within eight victories of tying the Atlantic League's all-time record.
Both bullpens were outstanding, with York's relief corps holding off the Barnstormers over the final four innings.
Matt Neil fired a perfect sixth inning. The righty allowed a seventh inning run on an RBI double by Zawadski who drove in all three Lancaster runs in the game, snapping Neil's personal five-inning scoreless streak, but rebounded to strike out Tyler Bortnick for an important first out. Leyson Septimo then entered to handle the rest of the seventh, stranding two runners with a two-run lead.
Beau Vaughan made quick work of a 1-2-3 eighth inning, and Josh Judy finished it off with a scoreless ninth to nail down his second save in as many opportunities.
With the win, the Revs (5-7) move into a tie for second place in the Freedom Division, and jump ahead of Lancaster (5-8) in the early standings. York now leads the "War of the Roses" series, 4-2.
