Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release

SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters won their third-straight game with a 7-1 rout of Somerset in front of 6,023 fans at Constellation Field on a sun-soaked Wednesday afternoon. The win improves the Skeeters' record to 8-5 while Somerset falls to 6-5 going into the series finale.

Matt Wright picked up his first victory of the season with 5.0 strong innings, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out five. Somerset's Sean Bierman (0-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season, giving up two runs on four hits and four walks.

Sugar Land utilized a trio of walks in the bottom of the second to take an early 1-0 lead in the contest. Chris Wallace, Denny Almonte and Kevin Russo were all issued free passes to open up the inning. Patrick Palmeiro grounded into a 6-4-3 double play, scoring Wallace.

The Skeeters tacked on another run in the fifth with a leadoff walk. Palmeiro was bunted over to second by Todd Jennings before Amadeo Zazueta singled through the right-side to put runners on the corners. Dustin Martin legged out a single to push across Zazueta and stake the Skeeters to a 2-0 lead.

Sugar Land expanded on the lead in the sixth with a RBI single through the right-side by Palmeiro, scoring Wallace from third before putting together a big inning in the seventh. Following a leadoff walk to Martin, Weems doubled down the left field line. Delwyn Young reached on an error by the third basemen, allowing Martin to score from third. Wallace also reached on an error after Patriots pitcher Adam Donachie fired wide of first base, allowing a pair of runs to score and push the Skeeters' advantage to 6-0. Wallace would go on to score on a wild pitch to Almonte and push the lead to 7-0.

Somerset would cut into the lead in the eighth to break up the shutout, but it was too little, too late for the Patriots as Sugar Land cruised to a 7-1 victory.
