Revs Settle For Split At Long Island

July 23, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

The York Revolution dropped their series finale, 5-2 to the Long Island Ducks on Thursday evening in front of 5,385 fans at Bethpage Ballpark in Central Islip, NY. The Revs head home with a four-game series split as their two-game winning streak is halted, and will open a three-game series hosting the Camden Riversharks on Friday night at 6:30 p.m.

Both teams missed opportunities to score early in Thursday's contest.

The Revs received a pair of walks from Ducks starter Ian Marshall in the top of the first but were unable to pair those with a base hit.

Long Island loaded the bases with one out against Revs starter Logan Williamson who then fell behind Jon Griffin 2-0, but came back to induce a clutch double play grounder to third, escaping unscathed.

The Revs had another opportunity in the third. James Simmons lined an 0-2 pitch to right for a leadoff single, and Mikey Reynolds worked a walk to put two men on. Wilson Valdez dropped down a sacrifice bunt, which prompted the Ducks to intentionally walk Eric Patterson, loading the bases. The move paid off as Marshall retired Brandon Boggs on a foul pop up and struck out Yeicok Calderon looking to leave the bases loaded.

It was a key momentum swing as the Ducks then opened the scoring in their half of the inning. Long Island appeared to have the game's first run when Randy Ruiz yanked a single toward the line in left field, but Nick Ferdinand got to the ball quickly and rifled a strike to Valdez, who in turn made a perfect relay home to nail Delta Cleary, Jr. attempting to score for the second out. The Ducks would still cash in as Griffin elevated a 1-2 pitch and launched a two-run homer to left-center, his 12th of the year, putting Long Island in front 2-0.

Long Island rallied for two more in the fifth. After Williamson had rolled another double play grounder, Dan Lyons kept the inning alive with a single to right-center. Bryan Sabatella then reached on an infield single, and after a wild pitch, Cleary, Jr. singled up the middle, driving in both runners to make it 4-0.

Boggs launched a two-run homer to right-center in the top of the fifth, slicing the deficit in half at 4-2. It marked the second straight game with a home run for Boggs and the Revs' sixth of the series. Calderon followed with a double to right-center, but Marshall (4-5) settled down to finish six innings and snap a personal four-game losing streak.

The Ducks added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out RBI double to right-center by Ruiz. All five Long Island runs scored with two outs.

Williamson (4-7) suffered the loss, charged with four runs in five innings of work. The lefty was touched for four hits and four walks while striking out one batter.

Ryan Kussmaul closed a near-flawless effort by the Long Island bullpen, nailing down his league-leading 24th save by striking out the side in the ninth after allowing a leadoff single by Andres Perez.

After being held to a combined six hits over the previous two games by the York pitching staff, Long Island used a 13-hit attack, including a 3-for-4 game by Cleary, Jr. The Ducks won despite stranding 13 runners on the night.

Notes: The Revs fall to 4-9 against the Ducks and finish the season series 3-4 in Central Islip. York is tied with Somerset for the most wins by a visiting team at Bethpage Ballpark, as the Ducks are now 31-11 at home. York falls to 6-8 in the second half, but is just one game out of first place as the other three Freedom Division clubs are all 7-7. York righty Matt Neil (2-6, 4.59) faces Camden righty Wes Torrez (4-3, 4.95) on Friday evening. It is Dance Night and Girl Scout On-Field Sleepover Night, as well as a Guaranteed Win Friday presented by Commonwealth Connections Academy. Tickets are on sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
