Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters dropped a 4-3 decision to the Lancaster Barnstormers in front of 4,169 fans at Constellation Field, capping a split in today's day/night double-header. The Skeeters offense was held to just four hits after the first inning and hit into three double-plays over the final four innings. The setback moves Sugar Land to 7-7 in the second half and 43-41 overall while Lancaster improves to 7-7 and 35-49.
The highlight for Sugar Land came in the bottom of the first when Delwyn Young recorded his 1500th-career hit with a one-out single into left-center.
Much like the first game of the double-header, the Skeeters struck the Barnstormers starter early to take a quick advantage. Johan Limonta drove a one-out single through the middle of the infield off Pat Misch and Young recorded his 1500th-career hit with a single into the left-center alley to move Limonta to scoring position. Chris Wallace picked up his 49th-RBI of the season and 21st in his last 19 games, breaking the scoring seal. Patrick Palmeiro pulled a two-run single into left to inflate the cushion to 3-0.
Lancaster answered the Skeeters early offensive output in the top of the second, aided by three-straight one-out walks from starting pitcher, Sean Gallagher. Following a Mike McDade strikeout to open up the inning, Gallagher surrendered free passes to Brian Cavazos-Galvez, Lance Zawadzki and Luke Hughes. Juan Apodaca singled into center, scoring one run and Zach Collier legged out a fielder's choice to keep the inning alive and scoring the second run. The former big leaguer escaped further trouble when Wallace gunned down Collier trying to steal second.
The Barnstormers tied the game in the top of the third. Anderson Feliz singled through the right-side of the infield and advanced to second and third on consecutive groundouts. McDade sprayed a double down the line in right to score Feliz and knot the score at three.
Lancaster took its first lead in the series in the top of the sixth. Andrew Carpenter, who had just come in to relive Gallagher, surrendered a one-out walk to Cavazos-Galvez before the Barnstormers right fielder was moved up to second on a groundout from Zawadzki. Apodaca singled into left to put the Barnstormers ahead, 4-3.
Sugar Land's offense grounded into double plays to end the sixth, eighth and ninth to quell any rallies from the home team.
