Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters' offense and starting pitcher Derek Blacksher made a big splash in a 6-2 win over Lancaster on Super Splash Day at Constellation Field with 5,998 fans in attendance. The win bolsters the Skeeters' resume this season to 7-6 in the second-half and 43-40 overall.
The Skeeters took advantage of Lancaster starter, Nate Reed's control issues early to strike for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Kevin Russo opened the inning with a single into left before stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch. Delwyn Young drew a four-pitch walk to put runners on the corners. Russo came in for the game's first run on Reed's second wild pitch of the inning, giving Sugar Land a 1-0 lead. Allan Dykstra picked up his first RBI with the Skeeters, poking a single up the middle to plate Young from second and staking Sugar Land to a 2-0 edge.
Sugar Land inflated the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third. Russo drew a walk to open the frame and Young reached on an infield single to first with one out. Chris Wallace rifled a double into the left-center alley to score a pair. With the double, the backstop has 10 doubles and six home runs in his last 18 games with 20 RBI.
Derek Blacksher turned in his best start with the Skeeters in his performance in the first game of the double-header. The right-hander went 6.0 shutout innings, scattering three hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. Blacksher improved to 3-2 following his performance.
The Skeeters pushed the lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the seventh. Renny Osuna poked a single into right and Amadeo Zazueta sprayed a double down the right field line to move both runners into scoring position. With the infield drawn in, Sugar Land was unable to come up with a base knock, but Denny Almonte deposited a two-out single into center to score both runs and increase the lead to 6-0.
The Barnstormers chipped into the lead in the top of the eighth. Keith Castillo doubled into right-center to open the inning before Zach Collier tripled down the right field line to score a run. Yusuke Kajimoto singled up the middle to score Collier and trim the score to 6-2, but Adrian Martin avoided further damage by striking out Kent Matthes to end the rally.
